1. There are some people who would starve themselves just to be super thin.
2. There are some people who would eat and will push themselves to throw up because they are afraid that they might get fat by what they have eaten
3. There are some people who would have queer eating rituals like throwing food so others will not notice that they are not eating at all.
4. There are some people who thinks that the only means to be attractive is to be thin.
Weird but yes there are some who are like that.
It is possible. These are some of the signs of Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa is a common term that we use often to refer to an eating disorder. However, do we really know what Anorexia Nervosa is? How deadly it is and how our society is a big stage where everyone is pushed to have this condition? Everyone can be pushed and be a victim…
However, we can protect ourselves by knowing this eating disorder more. Here are some pieces of information that might help:
Fact #1: Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder. It is an eating disorder wherein the person develops an aversion to eating food with the aim of losing weight. There is an obsession to be thin and they see that the only way to achieve it is through the use of unhealthy eating habits.
Fact#2: Anorexia Nervosa is rooted at psychological factors. There are two claims on the real origin of the disease. There are some researches that point out that it is rooted on biological causes. Here we talk about genes, heredity and DNA composition, etc. According to those researches, there are some people who are predisposed to have the disorder. However, bigger premium is given to the psychological factors that bring about Anorexia Nervosa. This is due to the history of the disorder. Anorexia Nervosa only just became an official disease when the society imposed that being thin is beautiful.
Fact#3: Treatment is available for those with Anorexia Nervosa. There are treatments available for those who have Anorexia Nervosa. Treatments depend on how long the patient has practiced the unhealthy eating rituals. The patient’s body would have to be restored to the normal weight after which psychotherapy sessions can commence to address the underlying psychological factors that brought about the disorder.
Fact#4: Anorexia Nervosa is more prevalent in women than in men. Only 10% of those affected with Anorexia Nervosa are males while the 90% are females. These may be attributed to the way the society treats men and women. Females are raised to be submissive and to follow the mores of society more strictly than males. Moreover, females are always linked to beauty but males are not usually pressured to be beautiful.
Fact#5: Anorexia Nervosa is deadly. Bad eating habits such as the ones practiced by patients with Anorexia Nervosa such as starvation, eating very little, abstaining on carbohydrates can lead to physiological damage and eventually if not treated immediately, can lead to death.
