Anorexia Nervosa: Myths and Facts
Do you think being thin is fashionable? Are you obsessed with being thin?
Did you ever try starving yourself so you will not gain weight?
Was there a time when you try to do so much exercise so you can burn all the fats in your body?
Does your life revolve around being thin to be attractive?
If your answer to any of the questions above is yes, then you might have to rethink the way you look at dieting or even worse, you may need to see a doctor. Why? You might be suffering from Anorexia Nervosa. Of course you know what Anorexia Nervosa is. It is one of the most famous eating disorders. Despite being widely used, there are still myths lurking around about Anorexia Nervosa.
Myth #1: Anorexia Nervosa is just a condition for Models and Movie Actresses
Wrong. While a big percentage of the persons suffering from the disease are in the movie industry, this didn’t discount the fact that a normal and ordinary person cannot have the disease. There is still an ongoing debate as to the real cause of Anorexia Nervosa. One theory is that it is caused by too much social pressure that leads the person to resort to extreme measures to cope with the pressure. This is prevalent for those in the movie industry because there is a constant expectation to be beautiful. Beauty is usually tied up with weight.
Myth#2: People suffering from Anorexia Nervosa totally do not eat
Wrong. Most of the cases of Anorexia Nervosa wouldn’t want other people to know that they are actually starving themselves just to be thin. People suffering from this condition put up a façade that they are just on a healthy diet. Most of the patients deny that they are following unhealthy eating rituals and would like to hide it. There are various rituals that people with Anorexia Nervosa follows. Like for instance, they can starve themselves, they can also engage in doing too much exercise, they can also eat and then throw up later on to expel the food that they have eaten. However, they still eat even in small quantities.
Myth #3: There is no cure for those with Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa is not like cancer where there is no known cure yet. Fortunately, there is hope for those who are suffering from Anorexia Nervosa. This condition can be cured. There are two treatments that people suffering from Anorexia Nervosa undergo: the physiological and the psychological treatment. In order to do this, the patient should acknowledge that she is suffering from the disease. Usually the physiological treatment comes in first because the patient would have to get nutrients in order to restore the body into normal functioning. Severe cases are confined in the hospital. Once the physical body was already restored, the patient undergoes psychotherapy where the roots of the disease were determined. Patient will undergo a series of psychotherapy session to straighten their self-perception and to prevent relapse into the old unhealthy eating habits.
